What is silk fabric?

11 Dec 2022

Silk is a fiber made of animal protein produced by certain insects, commonly by silkworms, for the construction of their cocoons and webs. Generally including mulberry silk, tussah silk, castor silk, cassava silk and so on. Due to its unique properties, it's one of the most popular fabrics for clothing. Silk is the most luxurious fabric, the most comfortable fabric, the most absorbent fabric (equivalent to wool), the best fabric for drape, the best fabric for color, with the greatest luster, the finest "feel", etc. These are just some of the factors that make the fabric so popular. The fabric is cool in summer and warm in winter so it is well used in silk bedding.

Mulberry silk is the most widely used type of silk, which manufacturers derive from Bombyx Mori. The larvae of Bombyx Mori, found exclusively on mulberry trees, are the only species used to make silk. The fibers are structured in a triangular prism arrangement that gives the silk the unique shimmering effect seen in certain lighting conditions. This is the silkworm used by industry mainly for the commercial production of silk. The mulberry tree contributes about 90% to the total world production of raw silk.
