How to Wash Silk at Home: A Gentle Step-by-Step Guide

Silk can be washed at home, but it needs a gentler routine than cotton or synthetic clothing. The safest approach is to follow the care label first, then control water temperature, detergent, friction and drying.

Before washing a blouse, scarf, pillowcase or pair of pyjamas, check the fibre composition and test a hidden area if the item is dark or brightly coloured. If the label says dry clean only, follow that instruction.

Check the care label and colour

Care labels vary between garments. Look for instructions about hand washing, machine washing, water temperature and ironing. Separate light and dark colours, and never leave silk soaking for a long time because dyes can move through the water.

Choose a silk-friendly detergent

Use a small amount of mild detergent made for delicate or silk fabrics. Avoid bleach, strong stain removers, biological detergents and fabric softener unless the label specifically allows them. Too much detergent can leave the fabric dull or stiff.

Wash with gentle movement

Fill a clean basin with cool or lukewarm water. Add the detergent, place the garment in the water and move it slowly with your hands. Do not scrub, twist or rub the fabric against itself. Handle cuffs and collars lightly rather than pulling them.

Rinse and remove excess water

Rinse with clean water until the detergent is gone. Do not wring silk. Place the garment on a clean towel, roll the towel gently and press lightly to absorb excess water. This helps reduce stretching and protects the shape.

Dry and iron carefully

Reshape the garment while damp and lay it flat on a dry towel unless the care label recommends another method. Keep it away from direct sunlight, radiators and tumble dryers. If ironing is allowed, use the lowest suitable temperature and a pressing cloth.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • using hot water or a hot dryer
  • scrubbing a stain aggressively
  • wringing or twisting wet silk
  • spraying perfume directly onto the fabric
  • ignoring the care label

FAQ about washing silk

Can silk go in the washing machine?

Some items can be machine washed on a delicate programme, but only when the care label allows it. Use a protective laundry bag, cool water and a gentle setting.

Why does silk feel stiff after washing?

Excess detergent, heat or poor rinsing can affect the handle. Rinse thoroughly, avoid heat and allow the item to dry naturally.

Can I remove every stain at home?

Not always. Dab fresh marks gently and seek professional advice for oil, dye or old stains instead of using a harsh treatment.
